The Association of Soil and Substrate Manufacturers the Netherlands (VPN) represents the interests of over 95% of the market of the Dutch substrate sector. The substrates produced in the Netherlands form an indispensable basis for growing vegetables, flowers and plants in Europe. Different forms of substrate can be distinguished, with potting soil being one of them. During production, sustainability, product safety and socially responsible raw materials are considered at large. One of the current topics of VPN is obtaining information about the presence of fungi in these substrates.
For this project you as a student consultant will conduct a literature study to better understand naturally occurring fungi in raw materials/end products. Attention is given to 6 different organic raw materials and organic substrates. Questions such as which fungi are found most often and is there a relationship between the presence of these fungi with a particular commonly-used raw material are being answered. Also, you will visit several substrate manufacturers of VPN to conduct interviews. This way you’ll gather all the information to gain more insight into naturally occurring fungi in substrates/potting soil/end products!
